Robots.txt Generator
Per-crawler Allow/Disallow rules and sitemap links, ready to paste
Directive semantics that trip people up
- Specificity wins — a longer matching Allow beats shorter Disallow within one group; the preview annotates which rule fires.
- Grouping — blank lines end a group; accidental mixing disables rules after it (validated here).
- Crawl-delay — respected by Bing/Yandex, ignored by Google (noted in output comment).
- Sitemap lines — absolute URLs only; multiples allowed and emitted correctly.
Rules expressed the way crawlers parse them
User-agent groups, allow/disallow ordering, crawl-delay and sitemap declaration — assembled from checkboxes with a live file preview.
Three starting presets
Allow-all, block-all, and WordPress presets populate the rule groups instantly, each with the correct User-agent and Allow or Disallow lines for the intent.
Per-crawler rule rows
Every User-agent gets its own editable rows of Allow and Disallow paths, and Sitemap lines are appended from a separate field so they never mix with rules.
File rebuilds as you edit
The file text rebuilds with every change in a monospace output box, so the final robots.txt content is visible before you copy or download it.
Frequently asked questions
What does an empty Disallow line mean?⌄
A bare "Disallow:" with nothing after it means "disallow nothing" — i.e. this crawler is allowed everywhere. That's what the Allow-all preset generates.
Does robots.txt actually stop pages from being indexed?⌄
Not reliably by itself — it only asks well-behaved crawlers not to fetch a path. A page can still get indexed (e.g. if linked from elsewhere) even if disallowed. To truly keep a page out of search results, use a noindex meta tag or HTTP header instead.
Is my content uploaded anywhere?⌄
The file is generated from your own selections entirely client-side. Download it and place it at your site root - the tool never sees your domain unless you type it.
Does robots.txt remove pages from Google?⌄
No — Disallow blocks crawling, not indexing. Blocked URLs can still appear as bare links. For true removal use noindex or the removals tool.

What Is a Robots.txt Generator?
Robots.txt is a plain-text file at the root of a site telling crawlers which paths they may fetch. It is built from rule groups: a User-agent line naming one bot or the catch-all star, Allow and Disallow path lines, an optional Crawl-delay, and Sitemap pointers. Hand-writing looks trivial until an over-broad Disallow shadows an Allow, or a missing file leaves staging wide open. This generator assembles the file from editable rule rows with a live output pane, ready to copy or download as robots.txt for the domain root.
Rule groups the file is built from
- 🤖 One group per crawler, from a named bot to the star matching everyone, with add and remove controls
- 🚫 Multiple Disallow paths plus Allow exceptions in the same group for fine control
- ⏱️ Optional Crawl-delay for bots that hammer the server, blank when unneeded
- 🗺️ One or more Sitemap lines appended after the groups for discovery
- 🧩 Three presets: allow-all for open sites, block-all for staging, WordPress defaults shielding admin paths while freeing admin-ajax
Occasions that call for a fresh robots file
- 🚧 Sealing a staging host so it never leaks into the index
- 🛡️ Slowing one aggressive scraper without blocking well-behaved search bots
Advisory protocol, not a padlock
- 📨 Robots.txt is a request polite crawlers honor; it cannot force a rogue bot to stop
- 📍 The file only works at the domain root and takes effect on the next crawl, not instantly
Nothing you type travels anywhere during editing, since the whole file is composed inside your browser and only the file you save ever touches your server.
