Parameter reference used here
| Parameter | Purpose |
|---|---|
| utm_source | Traffic origin: newsletter, twitter, google |
| utm_medium | Channel type: email, cpc, social, referral |
| utm_campaign | Launch or promo name — kebab-case recommended |
| utm_term / utm_content | Paid keyword / A-B variant discriminator |
Values lowercase automatically (GA treats Social and social as different sources), spaces become dashes, and the QR button turns finished links scannable for print.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my UTM parameters getting URL-encoded?
UTM parameters are regular query-string values, and query strings must follow URL syntax: spaces become %20, special characters like & # ? are encoded. If you sent raw spaces or ampersands, analytics tools would misread where one parameter ends and the next begins — encoded values survive any redirect, copy-paste or link shortener intact.
What's the difference between utm_source and utm_medium?
utm_source is the platform the traffic came from (facebook, google, newsletter); utm_medium is the channel type (cpc for paid clicks, social, email, organic). utm_campaign names the promotion (spring_sale), while utm_term and utm_content are optional refinements — the paid keyword and the specific ad or link that was clicked.
Do UTM parameters affect SEO ranking?
URLs are built in your browser from your inputs. Since campaign links can contain product or partner names, keeping this local means nothing is logged anywhere.
Do UTM parameters hurt SEO?
Tagged URLs duplicate the canonical by nature — Google usually consolidates them. Keep internal links untagged and let UTMs live in campaigns, ads and newsletters.

What are UTM parameters and how do campaign links work?
Campaign tagging answers what analytics cannot alone: which exact link brought each visitor. Five small query tags do it, naming source, medium, campaign, plus term and content for finer splits. Without them every arrival looks like direct traffic, and a paid ad, a newsletter link and a search click blur into one number. With them each visit carries its origin into reports, steering budgets toward channels that convert. This generator assembles the tagged address live as fields are typed, with a parameter table showing what gets recorded.
Link surgery the generator performs
- 🔗 Five standard tags in canonical order, skipping blanks so partial tagging stays clean
- ⚡ Instant rebuild per keystroke with live character count and no submit step
- 🎯 Six one-tap presets: Facebook paid, Google cost-per-click, Google organic, newsletter email, Twitter social, LinkedIn social
- 🔧 Repairs included: missing scheme gains https, fragments stay last, values safely encoded
- 🧹 Idempotent rebuilds stripping older campaign tags first, so re-running never stacks duplicates
Campaigns that deserve tagged links
- 📢 Paid placements where each ad variant needs its own attributable name
- ✉️ Newsletter sends that must stand apart from ambient traffic
Tagging discipline and limits
- 📏 Consistent lowercase naming beats clever one-off labels when comparing months later
- 🔗 Tags belong on external inbound links, never internal navigation that would overwrite true origins
Link assembly runs fully offline in your browser, and the addresses you compose are never collected, counted or seen by us.
