Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. Frames are captured and the GIF is encoded entirely in your browser with a built-in GIF89a encoder — your video never leaves your device and there are no daily conversion limits.

Why is my GIF file so large?

GIF is a 1987 format that stores every frame as a full image with a 256-color palette, so it is inherently much larger than MP4. Reduce the width, lower the frame rate to 10 or 5 fps, or shorten the clip — a 3–6 second loop at 320 px is the sweet spot for chats and forums.

How is GIF quality kept high with only 256 colors?

The encoder samples frames across your whole clip and builds an optimized palette with median-cut quantization, then maps every pixel to the nearest palette color. Scenes with steady colors convert almost losslessly; very colorful gradients show slight banding — that is a limit of the GIF format itself.
