Frequently asked questions
What is TAR.GZ?⌄
A TAR bundle compressed with gzip; .tgz is the same format with a shorter name.
Difference between TAR and TAR.GZ?⌄
TAR is uncompressed; TAR.GZ is TAR plus gzip compression.
Do I need Linux?⌄
No, it works in any browser.
What about .tgz?⌄
Same as .tar.gz, fully supported.
Size limit?⌄
10GB hard, practical ~1.5GB desktop.
Can it handle large source trees?⌄
Yes, with thousands of files, via streaming gunzip.
tar is the box, gzip is the shrink-wrap
- .tar.gz is an uncompressed tape-archive streamed through a single-file compressor — one damaged byte mid-stream loses everything after it, unlike ZIP per-entry design.
- No central directory: the file list streams sequentially, so listing large archives takes as long as reading them.
- Permissions ride along in POSIX headers; Windows targets ignore them.

What Is TAR.GZ?
TAR.GZ — also written .tgz — is a TAR container squeezed with gzip: first tar bundles the files, then gzip shrinks the whole bundle. It is the classic Linux distribution format for source releases, npm packages, WordPress backups and server snapshots, because it preserves Unix permissions and folder trees while staying compact.
Two layers, handled in order
This tool gunzips the outer layer first and then parses the inner TAR, so you see the real file tree with names and sizes instead of a single opaque .tar blob. Both stages run locally in your browser with a progress bar, and you can cancel a slow job at any time.
When you would use it
Open a GitHub release source archive to read the code, inspect an npm-style .tgz before installing, check a server backup for the right directories without SSH access, or extract a single config file from a multi-gigabyte snapshot.
Tar vs gz vs zip, quickly
A .tar.gz has two layers while a plain .gz holds one single file and a .zip holds many files with per-file compression. If a download ends in .tar.gz or .tgz, this is the page you want; a lone .gz belongs on the GZ extractor, and a .zip opens on the ZIP extractor.
Honest limits
Files that are not actually gzip-compressed fail fast with a clear error instead of garbage output. A truncated download fails at the same layer, which almost always means fetching the file again. Symbolic links inside are listed but never followed. Uploads are accepted up to 10 GB, with a practical ceiling from device memory — around 512 MB on phones and 1.5 GB on desktops.
Privacy
Decompression and parsing stay in this browser tab from start to finish. Nothing — not the archive, not its file names — is sent to any server.
