AI Background Remover

Cut out people, products and pets in seconds — transparent PNG, no manual masking

🪙 AI segmentation on our CPU server: 2 credits per image

✨ The model finds the main subject automatically — people, pets, products and objects. Output is a transparent PNG.

Server-side FFmpeg handles any format — including HEVC/H.265 files your browser can't play. Files are deleted from the server within 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How does it decide what counts as the subject?

isnet-general-use is a general-purpose segmentation model trained on millions of images. It identifies the dominant foreground object. Group photos, transparent objects, or subjects touching the frame edge can confuse it — keep the main subject centered and separated from the background.

Will fine details like hair survive?

Hair and fur usually keep a soft edge rather than being cut to a hard silhouette. For pixel-perfect hair strands (studio cutouts) you would need a dedicated hair-matting model — acceptable for most product and profile uses.

What file formats can I upload?

JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF and TIFF up to 100 MB. The output is always a transparent PNG — the only format that carries real transparency.

Does it keep shadows?

Contact shadows are usually removed with the background. If you need a shadow, add the subject over your own background in an editor, or choose a solid light-gray replacement that reads naturally.

Segmentation pipeline explained

Removal happens in three passes on the worker:

  1. Detect — a saliency network finds foreground subjects (people, products, animals); multiple objects are all kept.
  2. Refine — alpha matting softens the boundary band, giving semi-transparent edges to hair and motion blur instead of a hard sticker outline.
  3. Composite — background is replaced with transparent, solid color, or one of your own uploads; the subject layer is untouched.

Output is PNG with a real alpha channel (not binary cutout). Typical jobs finish in 5–20 seconds; if detection fails — e.g. subject indistinguishable from background — the job fails honestly and refunds rather than returning a mangled image.

How it works

  1. 1

Upload a photo with a clear subject — people, pets, products and objects all work. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, TIFF.

  2. 2

That's it — the model separates the subject automatically. No outlines to draw, no settings to tune.

  3. 3

Download the transparent PNG. Busy or low-contrast backgrounds can leave a few stray pixels — a quick manual touch-up handles them.

Cutouts with hair-level precision

Subject segmentation runs on GPU hardware with alpha-matting refinement — the difference shows at fringes, fur and flyaway hair.

One-click background removal

An AI segmentation model separates subject from background automatically — portraits, products and stickers need no manual masking.

Results in seconds

A lightweight neural network runs on our server in seconds, so you get a ready-to-use cutout without waiting minutes.

What is AI background removal?

Background removal is the classic image chore that used to eat an hour of lasso work: tracing the outline of a person, cutting around flyaway hair, and cleaning the leftover edge pixels by hand. This tool hands that job to a real segmentation model — rembg with the isnet-general-use weights — running on the site's server. You upload a photo, and the model separates the dominant subject from its surroundings on its own, then returns a PNG with a fully transparent background. No outlines to draw, no brushes to tune, no settings at all: upload, wait a few seconds, download. Because the heavy lifting happens on the server rather than in the browser, even large phone photos and scans stay fast, and the format range is wider than a browser canvas can decode.

Capabilities at a glance

  • 🎯 Detect the main subject automatically — people, pets, products or objects — with no manual masking
  • 🖼️ Output a true transparent-background PNG, the only format that carries real transparency
  • 📁 Accept JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF and TIFF files up to 100 MB, including iPhone photos
  • ⚡ Process in a few seconds on the server, with live progress shown on the page
  • 🧹 Apply automatic edge post-processing for cleaner silhouettes
  • 📥 Download the finished cutout immediately, leaving the original untouched

Common use cases

  • 🛍️ Cleaning up product photos for an online store so items sit on a clean background
  • 🪪 Making an ID-style photo by replacing a cluttered wall with a plain backdrop
  • 👤 Cutting a headshot for your profile picture, resume or social accounts
  • 🎨 Extracting an object for a collage, poster, thumbnail or video overlay
  • 🖼️ Preparing images for print, labels or merchandise mockups

Privacy and limits: your photo is uploaded to the site's server and processed by the segmentation model there; the upload and intermediate files are deleted as soon as the job finishes, and only the transparent result is held briefly for download. The tool needs an account and costs a few credits per image. Automatic cutout is not perfect: busy or low-contrast backgrounds can leave a few stray pixels, group photos and transparent objects confuse the model, subjects touching the frame edge may be clipped, and fine hair keeps a soft edge rather than a pixel-perfect matte — a quick touch-up in any editor handles the leftovers.
