What does a Whois lookup tell me?

It returns the public registration record of a domain, IP address, or ASN: the registrar, creation and expiry dates, status flags, name servers, DNSSEC, and the owning organization. It tells you who administers a network or which registrar holds a domain — never passwords or private contact details, which registries redact for privacy.

Why are some contact fields shown as withheld?

Under GDPR and similar privacy laws, most registries stop publishing registrant names, emails and phone numbers. When a registry redacts a field, this tool labels it as withheld for privacy instead of showing a blank — an empty field would look like a lookup failure, and it isn't one.

Is this the same as the old WHOIS?

Almost every TLD now publishes via RDAP, the modern successor to WHOIS: structured JSON served over HTTPS instead of free text over a raw TCP port, so fields are consistent across registries. This tool uses RDAP only; a TLD that hasn't adopted it yet is reported as unsupported rather than guessed at.

What is a Whois lookup?

Every domain, IP range, and autonomous system number has a public registration record — who registered it, through which registrar, when it was created and when it expires. This lookup queries the registry's own RDAP servers directly and presents that record as a structured report: registrar, dates, status codes explained in plain language, name servers, DNSSEC, and the owning organizations. No scraping, no third-party middleman, no signup — it is the same data registrars and network operators use when investigating domain ownership, planning renewals, or tracing who operates a network. The lookup is free and instant: nothing is uploaded or stored, and results are cached briefly so checking the same name twice is fast and polite to the registries.
