Why Sunrise Times Wander Through the Year

Most people know days get longer in summer and shorter in winter, but the finer pattern surprises them: the earliest sunset happens weeks before the winter solstice, and the latest sunrise weeks after it. That skew comes from two effects adding up — Earth's tilted axis changes the sun's daily height, while its slightly elliptical orbit makes the solar day itself stretch and shrink by seconds, which accumulate into minutes across a season.

Reading the dial

The dashed arc is the sun's journey between the two horizon crossings; its height above the horizon line at mid-arc reflects how high the sun climbs, which shrinks toward zero as you approach the polar circles in winter. Near those latitudes the arc can fail to cross the horizon at all — that is exactly when the midnight-sun and polar-night notices appear.

Under the hood

  • Solar times use the NOAA sunrise equation with a −0.83° horizon altitude to account for refraction.
  • Moon phases advance from the 2000-01-06 18:14 UTC new moon by the mean synodic month of 29.53059 days.
  • All results are computed server-side per request — there is nothing cached to go stale.
  • Dates are interpreted as UTC calendar days to stay stable across time zones and DST transitions.
