What is Qi Men Dun Jia?

Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲, "Mysterious Door Hiding Jia") is one of the three great classical Chinese metaphysical arts (三式), alongside Da Liu Ren and Tai Yi. It has been used for over a thousand years to choose the most favorable moment and direction for important undertakings — from military campaigns and building projects to marriages and business decisions.

At its heart is a nine-palace grid based on the Luo Shu (洛书) magic square. A chart for a specific time arranges four layers over the grid: the earth plate of the 三奇六仪 (three wonders and six instruments — 乙丙丁 and 戊己庚辛壬癸), the nine stars (九星) that travel the palaces, the eight doors (八门 — 开休生 are auspicious, 惊死伤 are not), and the eight gods (八神). Which 局 (one of nine) the chart uses is set by the solar term of the moment, and whether the whole chart moves forward or backward (阴阳遁) is set by the season — winter to summer uses 阳遁, summer to winter uses 阴遁.
