What Is Chinese Chess?

Chinese Chess (Xiangqi) is a two-player strategy board game played on a 9×10 grid of intersections, divided by the "River" (楚河汉界), with a 3×3 "palace" at each end. Each side has 16 pieces — General, Advisors, Elephants, Horses, Rooks, Cannons and Pawns — each with its own movement rules: the Horse moves in an L, the Elephant in a 2-diagonal field, the Cannon jumps over a screen to capture, Rooks slide in straight lines, and Pawns move sideways only after crossing the river. The goal is to checkmate the enemy General.

🀄 What you can do

  • Play the AI at four levels — from Rookie (gentle) to Master (strong club play)
  • Ask for hints: the AI suggests a good move and highlights it
  • Undo any move, any time — playing the machine, there is no fairness issue
  • Follow the game in standard Chinese notation (炮二平五 style), perfect for reviewing
  • Flip the board to play from Red's or Black's side
  • Two board skins and a symbol-assist mode with universal icons for new players

📌 When to use it

  • Learning the game — the built-in rules guide explains every piece with diagrams in 11 languages
  • Short breaks and commutes — the game auto-saves; pause and resume any time
  • Offline — after the first visit the game plays fully offline: moves, hints and undo all work with no network

🔒 Privacy: the whole game runs locally in your browser — rules engine and AI included. No account, no server round-trips, no personal data.
