Frequently asked questions
What is 称骨算命 (Bone Weight divination)?⌄
It is a traditional Chinese fortune method attributed to the Tang dynasty master Yuan Tian-Gang. Your birth year, month, day and hour each carry a classical weight measured in 两 and 钱; the four add up to a total that corresponds to one of 51 classical verses describing your temperament and fortune.
How accurate is the date calculation?⌄
The year pillar is exact (corrected by the 立春 solar term). The month and day follow the solar-term calendar — a close approximation of the lunar calendar (usually within a day). It is meant as an entertaining tradition, not a precise scientific calculation.
What does a heavier total mean?⌄
Traditionally, higher totals (5–7两) are considered more auspicious than lower ones (2–3两). But every verse includes a constructive message — a low weight simply suggests a life that rewards effort and self-reliance, which many people find just as valuable.
What is 称骨算命 (Bone Weight Divination)?
称骨算命 (Chenggu Suanming, "bone weight fortune") is a traditional Chinese divination method attributed to Yuan Tian-Gang, a master of the Tang dynasty (7th century). Its idea is striking in its simplicity: the moment of your birth itself carries a numerical "weight", and that weight tells your fortune.
The method converts your birth year, month, day and hour into four weights using fixed classical tables. The year uses the 60-year stem-branch cycle; the month, day and hour use traditional lunar month/day and the twelve two-hour 时辰. Each part is measured in 两 (liang) and 钱 (qian) — units from the old Chinese weight system. The four weights are added to give a total between about 2两1 and 7两2.
Each possible total corresponds to one of 51 classical verses (称骨歌). Lower weights traditionally suggest a life that requires hard work and self-reliance; middle weights suggest steady, earned prosperity; higher weights are considered naturally auspicious — wealth, honor, and the favor of others. The verses are four-line poems in classical Chinese, and the readings are usually supplemented with plain-language explanations of what each line means for temperament, career, wealth, marriage and health.
As with all traditional fortune methods, 称骨算命 is best treated as cultural heritage and entertainment: the verses are poetic, open-ended, and speak to universal human experiences rather than fixed fates.
